Our second cohort of students had the extraordinary opportunity to visit some of our esteemed partners in the stunning mining regions of Antofagasta and Calama, Chile. This unforgettable experience gave them invaluable insights into cutting-edge mining and water management processes and a deeper appreciation for the industry’s pivotal role in the region.
Discovering the World’s Largest Open-Pit Mine
One of the highlights of the visit was a tour of Chuquicamata, the world’s largest open-pit copper mine, operated by the state-owned mining giant Codelco. This iconic site showcases Chile’s mining industry’s immense scale and significance. Our students also explored the Ministro Hales Division, where they learned about its groundbreaking and unique process for extracting copper from oxides—a testament to the innovation driving modern mining.

Innovative Solutions at Ecometales
The journey continued with a visit to the Ecometales plant, a pioneer in sustainable mining practices. Here, students were introduced to their patented process for arsenic abatement in mining sludges. This innovative technology underscores the industry’s commitment to reducing environmental impacts and advancing cleaner production methods.
Exploring Antofagasta Minerals’ Centinela Plant
Another remarkable stop was at the Centinela plant, part of the Antofagasta Minerals portfolio. The students witnessed firsthand how the plant prepares for its most significant expansion, extending its operational life by over 30 years. With a projected annual production of 144,000 tons of copper, this expansion represents an essential milestone in the company’s history.
Academic Excellence at Universidad Católica del Norte
The final leg of the visit brought the students to our partner institution, Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN) in Antofagasta. They explored the university’s Geological Museum, gaining insights into the region’s rich geological heritage. At the CEITZASA center, they delved into advanced research on seawater desalination and water reuse—innovations crucial for sustainable development in the arid desert environment.

A Transformative Learning Experience
This enriching journey allowed our students to engage with world-class mining operations, cutting-edge technologies, and academic excellence. It deepened their understanding of the industry and inspired them to pursue innovative solutions for the future. The experience highlighted Chile’s role as a global mining and water management leader, leaving an indelible mark on all participants.
