Last week, our third cohort of students embarked on a truly eye-opening journey, visiting some of our most innovative industry partners. This exclusive trip allowed them to explore world-leading facilities and witness firsthand how groundbreaking technologies are shaping the future of the electric vehicle industry.
The journey started at Terrafame’s mine site and state-of-the-art processing plants, where students were introduced to a powerhouse for producing battery chemicals. Terrafame is at the forefront of the green energy revolution, producing the essential materials that power electric vehicles, one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global economy.
What sets Terrafame apart is its commitment to sustainability. Their battery chemicals are celebrated for having the lowest carbon footprint on the market, a remarkable achievement made possible by their pioneering bioleaching method. This highly energy-efficient process minimizes waste and reduces carbon emissions, showcasing how the industry can thrive while prioritizing the planet.
The adventure continued as the students were driven to the Sotkamo Silver mine, where they had the unique opportunity to explore the heart of the mining and ore processing operations. At the site, they witnessed the intricate processes of grinding and flotation at the plant, key steps in extracting precious minerals from the earth.
Sotkamo Silver is a trailblazer in sustainable mining, committed to advancing Finland’s mining sector while supporting the global shift towards green transition technologies. Located in the Kainuu region, Sotkamo Silver specializes in the responsible extraction of silver and other essential metals that power modern industries.
The final stop of the students’ tour took them to the GTK (Geological Survey of Finland) facility, where they were immersed in the world of high-tech research and mineral analysis. At GTK, students had the chance to see firsthand some of the most advanced analytical equipment used for mineral exploration and processing. This cutting-edge technology plays a pivotal role in both research and customer services, providing the vital data needed to drive the sustainable development of Finland’s natural resources.
For our students, this visit was not just about witnessing cutting-edge technology in action, but also about understanding how science and innovation drive the responsible and sustainable use of the earth’s resources. It was a powerful reminder of the incredible opportunities for progress when knowledge, technology, and sustainability come together.
